What is an AWS S3 Bucket?


Introduction

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is one of the most popular services on AWS.
Its main purpose is to store objects (files) in a scalable, secure, and highly available manner. An S3 bucket
is the basic container that allows you to store and organize these objects within the service.


What exactly is an S3 Bucket?

An S3 bucket is similar to a main folder in a file system. Within a bucket, you can store files
(objects) of all kinds: images, videos, documents, backups, logs, among others.

Key features:

  • Globally unique name: Each bucket must have a unique name across the entire AWS infrastructure.
  • Specific region: When creating it, a region is selected to physically locate the data.
  • Access control: Policies can be established to define who and how objects can be accessed.
  • Encryption: Supports encryption at rest (with SSE or KMS) and in transit (HTTPS).

What is an S3 Bucket used for?

  • Storing static files for websites.
  • Backing up databases and systems.
  • Distributing multimedia content.
  • Storing logs and temporary files.
  • Data source for analysis with services like Athena or Redshift Spectrum, which allow querying data directly from S3 using SQL.

S3 Storage Classes

  • S3 Intelligent-Tiering: Automatically moves between frequent and infrequent access tiers based on usage, optimizing costs.
  • S3 Standard-IA (Infrequent Access): Designed for data that is infrequently accessed but must be quickly available.
  • S3 One Zone-IA: Similar to Standard-IA, but stored in a single availability zone. Lower cost and less redundancy.
  • S3 Glacier: Archival storage with retrieval times of minutes to hours.
  • S3 Glacier Deep Archive: The most economical option for long-term data that is rarely needed.

Best Practices for Using S3 Buckets

  • Do not expose buckets publicly unless necessary.
  • Enable versioning to protect against overwrites or accidental deletion.
  • Use lifecycle policies to automatically delete old files.
  • Enable access logs for auditing and analysis.
  • Choosing the right storage class helps balance cost and availability according to project requirements.
